Vale Wally Stables

1st April 2025 by the President

With profound sadness, I advise of the passing of Wally Stables, a cornerstone of our District and a legend in the Victorian swimming community. For over six decades, Wally dedicated his life to nurturing young swimmers, leaving a legacy of excellence and inspiration. His mentorship and coaching shaped countless lives, both in and out of the pool.

Wally and Isabel were at the forefront of the creation of the Eaglehawk Swimming Club in the 1960's, rattling tins and knocking on countless doors to raise the funds to start a Club for the children of Eaglehawk. Once the Club was established he didn't stop there serving as Club Secretary for 26 consecutive years from 1972 to 1998. Over the years he held various coaching positions, guiding the Club's senior squads as well as its youngest swimmers, retiring from that role in his eighties, but always remaining involved in the Club.

Wally's contribution to swimming in Central Victoria extended well beyond his home Club, serving as District 15 President for many, many years and District Referee where he encouraged many parents to join the ranks of officialdom. For his immense service he was made Life Member of the Eaglehawk and Bendigo Hawks clubs, Central Victoria Swimming, was a recipient of Swimming Victoria's prestigious Herb Jeffrey Award and was proclaimed "Eaglehawk Citizen of the Year". Only a few years ago he was made a Life Member of Swimming Victoria and so stands amongst the best our sport has ever seen.

Wally’s vision built the very foundation of our District's ethos, fostering a strong community spirit that will continue to thrive. His impact as a respected elder and mentor resonates throughout Central Victoria.

On behalf of the Central Victoria Swimming committee, all of our affiliated Clubs and, most of all, all the swimmers of our District, I offer my sincerest condolences to Wally's family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable life.

SV Country Junior District report

26th October 2024 by the President

A strong team of 48 travelled to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre for the SV Junior District Competition - a competition for swimmers aged 8 years-old to 11 years-old. This team was made up of swimmers, coaches, and managers from the following clubs: Bendigo East, Bendigo Hawks Aquatic, Echuca, Gisborne Thunder, Kangaroo Flat and Nyah Two Bays/Swan Hill. Our Team was well represented with 159 individual races swum and 13 Relays.

The day was full of highs with top point score honours going to Makayla Soko (Bendigo East) with 88 points and Alexander Lee (Kangaroo Flat) with 70 points accumulated for our team. Other notable point scorers included Adele York (Bendigo Hawks, 72 Points), Sophie Lee (Kangaroo Flat, 66 Points), Bailey Stone (Bendigo Hawks, 52 points), Miley Bird (Bendigo East, 42 points), Owen Hocking (Bendigo Hawks, 35 points) and Stella McIntosh (Bendigo East, 35 points).

Our most valuable team member for the Meet was Miley Bird (Bendigo East), being an incredible leader and role model for those around her, organising her relay teams and checking in with the Team Managers and Coaches prior to races. Relay Swimmer of the meet was Ruby-Sue Lawson (Bendigo Hawks), stepping up into a Medley and Freestyle Relay for a team-mate unable to attend the Meet. Our encouragement award goes to Joseph Oliver (Gisborne Thunder), who while being nervous initially swam amazingly, competing in all four strokes for the first time at MSAC.

Our combined team score placed our squad 3rd overall in the Competition, just a handful of points behind second place. This includes all Boys and Girls individual events and Relays. This is a massive achievement for our team and we are amazed at how well they performed on the day.

We would like to thank our Team Managers, Sue Dullard (Bendigo Hawks), Marley Addlem (Bendigo East) and Seb Mansfield (Bendigo East) who supported our team both on pool deck, in the grandstand and prior to Meet day, organising our team so everyone was prepared and ready to swim! We would also like to thank the families for giving up their Saturday to travel to MSAC to support our swimmers on their journey as a competitive swimmer! We would like to thank the District for the opportunity to work with such a talented young team. We supported the athletes throughout the day, encouraging them to achieve their best.

Anne Sherman (Bendigo East) and Tyson Jelbart (Bendigo Hawks), Coaching team.

On behalf of the District Executive committee, I'd like to thank Sue Dullard for the wonderful job she did selecting the squad, preparing the entry data for SV, attending to last minute changes and communicating in a clear and timely manner with everyone involved in the months leading up to the competition. Thanks also to Anne and Tyson for guiding our young champions on the day. - Greg Smith, President

Strauch Strikes Silver at the Olympic Games

5th August 2024 by the Vice-President

Bendigo's Jenna Strauch has crowned her wonderful swimming career with an Olympic Silver medal in Paris today.

Australia's Women's 4 x 100m Medley relay Final team of Kaylee McKeown (Backstroke), Jenna Strauch (Breaststroke), Emma McKeon (Butterfly) and Molly O'Callaghan (Freestyle) brought home Australia's final medal for the Meet in a time of 3:53.11. Competing at her second Olympic Games, Jenna clocked an impressive 1:07.31 for her leg. As our nation's best female breaststroker, she also represented Australia in the 100m and 200m events.

Jenna started her career in the pools of Central Victoria as a 12yo member of the Bendigo East Swimming Club, with her prodigious talent soon becoming apparent to all who saw her swim. In 2011 she left Bendigo to chase her Olympic dream. Like all of the greatest athletes she was challenged with significant setbacks, persisted, stayed true to her beliefs and today prevailed on the podium at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Congratulations Jenna! Everyone in the Central Victoria swimming community has been watching your career progress and we couldn't be happier for you with your success today.
